When and How Do I Receive My Royalties?

What is a royalty?

A royalty is like a commission. It’s paid to you for each copy of your book that is sold to bookstores, libraries, and on the internet, and through our 24 hours a day, every day toll-free order service. You are paid a percentage of each sale, based on the amount Xulon receives for each sale, minus printing costs.

How are my royalties calculated?

Xulon Press pays the highest royalties in the industry. In fact, for all books sold to the trade (bookstores, distributors, Amazon.com, etc.) we keep nothing! We give it all back to you. Click here to learn more about how your royalties are calculated.

How can I track my royalties?

We report royalties to our authors on a quarterly basis, approximately 45 days after we receive reports from our distributors--the primary sources we use for book sales reporting. The data in these reports is surveyed and audited regularly to insure accuracy. We do not currently offer real-time tracking of book sales or royalties.

When will I receive my royalty reports and royalty check (if applicable)?

• For Q 1 (Jan.-Mar.) you'll receive your royalty report around May 15th.
• For Q 2 (Apr.-June) you'll receive your royalty report around August 15th.
• For Q 3 (July-Sep.) you'll receive your royalty report around Nov. 15th.
• For Q 4 (Oct.-Dec) you'll receive your royalty report around Feb. 15th.

How can Amazon.com and stores offer my book for a discount? Doesn’t my book have a set retail price?

Your book has a set retail price based on your book's final page count. We sell your book on your behalf at that retail price. But retailers (bookstores) and websites that sell your book, buy the books at a wholesale discount, and can discount your book.

What is the retail price of my book?

Once you approve your final galley and know your book's final page count, you can verify your book's retail price. For more information, click here for our current retail pricing.

What is the wholesale price of my book?

It can range from 40% to 60% of the retail price of your book, but you can use 55% as an average. So if your book has a retail price of $12.99, the wholesale selling price will be, on average, $5.85. Remember, your royalty is paid on the wholesale price.

What in the world is a W-9 and what do I do with it?

If you'd like us to pay your royalties for sales of your book, you MUST complete a

Can you let me know which specific bookstores purchased my book?

No. Distributors do not report specifically which bookstores or online retailers bought your book--just total sales when applicable.

Do the publisher, bookstore and distributor make money from my book’s sales in stores and online?

Yes, the distributor, store or website, and the publisher do make money from each book sold--just as is the case throughout the publishing industry. But with Xulon Press, you make a LOT more off from each book sold than authors for traditional publishers do.

Why have I not received a royalty report and/or royalty check?

The top reason an author does not receive a royalty report or royalty check is that they have not kept Xulon Press updated on mailing address or contact information. PLEASE email me any time you change your email address, phone # or home/ mailing address.
