Deacon - Phoenix of the Clergy brings brilliant theological clarity to true diaconal ministry by engaging the reader with an intense and readable look into its history. The prescription for success is simply defined and canonically faithful. This is a must-read for deacons, the laity and the church hierarchy - for all who appreciate that church must change

E.C. Andercheck looks at the church's ministry through
the lens of the diaconate.  What he sees, and enables us to see, is what a gift the
diaconate is to the church's mission today.  The church must utilize the
ministry of Deacon in more fruitful, creative ways in the church of the future;
Ed's insightful, wise, and challenging book shows us why and how.”
Will Willimon, United Methodist Bishop, retired
Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry
Duke Divinity School

As the Phoenix metaphor suggests, what the author
advocates is not new.  Instead, he calls for the rebirth of a vital form
of ministry present in the Church's earliest days.  He offers a solution
to the current pastoral leadership crisis:  an invigorated, educated, and
empowered diaconate.  This appeal to restore diaconal ministry to its
rightful place is timely, convincing, and important."
Craig Hill, United Methodist Minister
Dean
Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist
University

A must to read for anyone who is considering the
diaconate or for anyone who wishes to deepen their knowledge: it brings
important insights into the history of the diaconate throughout the centuries.
Fr. Greg Podwysocki, Pastor
Adjutant Judicial Vicar
Roman Catholic Diocese of Joliet

The study of history, especially Church history, should
not be an exercise out of an antiquarian curiosity, but a search for insight to
guide the Church in the present and into the future. Andercheck's project does
just this, the challenge it offers the Church today is to imagine how this
model may be adapted.
J. Warren Smith, United Methodist minister
Associate Professor of Historical Theology
Duke Divinity School

Archdeacons played a powerful role in the judicial
affairs of every diocese during the Middle Ages. This cogent history has
provided a valuable roadmap for the Church to better use this ancient office in
the future.
Ken Pennington
Kelly-Quinn Professor of Ecclesiastical and Legal
History
The Catholic University of America

Andercheck’s proposal for the development of diaconal
ministry in the contemporary church is based upon a thorough review of its
biblical basis, historical development, and theological significance. The book
provides an excellent foundation and guide to planning for the future.
 J. Patout Burns, Jr.,
Edward A. Malloy Professor of Catholic Studies,
