Born into humble circumstances and reared by religious parents in Dumaguete, Philippines, the author early on tackled worrisome problems: lung disease in college, libel suits as an editor, and a physical assault on his life. He and family were enabled, he believes through divine help, to land in America, finishing a Ph.D. in Northern Illinois. After joining the Philippine Foreign Ministry, he became a Fellow in Harvard.
