The frontiers. The word itself conjures up mystery and the unknown, a fearful thing for some, but for others, a desire to go simply because it is there. To people like Ernest Shackleton or Roald Amundsen, it was the icy, wind-blown tundras of the polar realms.
To others, like Stanley Livingston, it was the exploration of the Nile River. To still others, like those early astronauts, it was space itself. Whether one is a naturalist or a missionary however, the words of the apostle Paul echo their own sentiments when it comes to the frontiers. “It has always been my desire to preach the gospel where it has not been preached before.”
To go where few if any have gone then, is what stirred the heart of John Sorensen and his young wife Elspeth to leave everything they had known to live in the frontier setting of Alevi Islam. What would begin as a romantic adventure however, would require much more of them than they would think they had to give, when they had to come to grips with what it truly means to follow Jesus. Come explore the hidden places of a land long forgotten, save for those who lived there, and the lessons this couple learned along the way, in the first volume of this two-volume book.

John “Jack” Sorensen was born to a family of Norwegian and Finnish immigrants on the Keeweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan in the early 1950’s, where life was very much a frontier setting. After having languished in the dark underworld of sin, he embraced Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior in his late thirties and later, spurred on by the natural exploits of personal heroes like Daniel Boone and Jack London, he exchanged life as he knew it for life in the frontier setting of middle eastern Shiite islam, where he lives today with his wife and children.
