“Angel Food Cake” (AFC), A Forty Day Devotional for an Upside/Down World is a Lenten style devotional with a fasting (Eschewal) component included. Structured so it can overlay the Lenten calendar, it may be utilized as a Lenten Devotional. But why pigeonhole your 40 day fasting efforts into Lent only, when you can use this beneficial spiritual practice now or during other seasons of the year?
In our upside/down world, we often need to come to our senses. AFC helps us do that by connecting each daily scripture and devotion to one of our 5 physical senses.
The 6th and full final week (Holy Week during Lent) is themed for insight or that of the Holy Spirit. Each week is concluded with reflective questions to stimulate discussion in a small group.
Pilgrim readers may notice along the way mention of angels, whether it in Bible scripture or in the author’s personal experience. We have them on our life’s path and they are indeed heaven sent. When our relationship with Immanuel is strong, we notice angels often. Have a bite of AFC and “Taste and see that the Lord is good…” Psalm 34:8. Praying you are an angel on this path!

Born in Akron, Ohio, at the age of 3 Brad’s family moved to Miami, Florida. Formative years were spent in that tropical locale where his time around the waters of the Atlantic had great impact on his soul. He found himself landlocked in Chattanooga, Tn. in the ninth grade where he attended an all-boys military school. Providentially, the school is located on the Tennessee river which calmly flowed outside his dorm window.
At the University of Georgia study in Mass Communication earned him an ABJ Degree with a major in Radio-TV-Film. During those college years he developed his penchant for writing. After graduating in 1974, he worked for a network TV affiliate in Daytona Beach, Fla. His proximity to NASCAR led to PR/Marketing positions in the racing industry which landed him in Charlotte, NC and then Atlanta, Ga. He has lived in metro Atlanta ever since.
Brad’s career has taken a detour or two, but he always finds himself writing for something or someone. Now his call as laity in the Church is to create content and extend the Gospel into our upside/down world.
