This book is intended for parents who have lost a child, of any age, for any reason. The unbearable grief is like no other. There are no easy answers and the grief journey for each family is unique. This is uncharted territory, yet other parents have experienced the same thing. By sharing their stories in this book, they show us that months and often years later, they still grieve and have holes in their hearts, but they also have found a way to live lives of purpose and meaning. They smile and laugh, show up daily for their families and often create new priorities, rituals, and support mechanisms.
The stories in this book were selected to show the variety of circumstances that bring parents to this challenge—cancer, suicide, accidents, genetic health issues, and more—and how each family deals with the grief. Perhaps you can find some healing here.
Alison’s Angels is a nonprofit organization connecting newly grieving parents and families, who have lost a child of any age, with emotional support and resources to help them cope when the unthinkable happens.
While nothing can take away the pain of losing a child, we have found through our personal experience that talking to other parents brings solace. They have been navigating this road no parent hopes to be on. As they are further down the road of the grief journey, their perspective may provide encouragement born of a newfound wisdom. They understand how it feels, share a bond, and their reflection on the things they learned and did might be adapted to fit another’s situation. It can help parents newer to this heartbreak cope just a little better. We don’t want any parents to walk through this nightmare alone.
